The benefits of a successful strategic planning process are clarity of vision, mission, and objectives, an understanding of how to achieve the objectives, and alignment of goals across the organization.

The purpose of strategic planning is not to plan for the future (though developing such plans is a part of the process). We believe that successful strategic planning is action oriented: the purpose of strategic planning is to take the correct actions today to bring about the desired future outcomes. Understanding the desired future outcomes and the actions necessary to achieve them is what strategic planning is about.

Approach

Our approach to strategic planning is at the same time both high-level and practical. We begin with the company's existing vision (what the world looks like in the company's space and where it is going) and mission (what the company should stand for in that space). We look carefully into the assets the company has developed, technical, financial, and human. And we look carefully outside the company, at the company's customers, competitors, and competencies, and identify the assets necessary for success.

Our process focuses on developing deep answers to three critical questions:

bulletWhere should it be tomorrow -- and how to get there?

Out of these three general questions will come a clear understanding of the company's proper vision and mission. We then draw upon internal and external sources of information to answer the following questions:

bulletWho are the best-in-class (BIC) competitors?
bulletWhat should be the measurement dimensions?
bulletWhat are the gaps between the company and BIC?
bulletHow should these gaps be filled or widened?
bulletWho are the customers and what do they need?
bulletWhat is the market, how is it developing, how can it be impacted?

From the answers to these questions we develop together the necessary objectives, strategies, and tactics.
